These terms cover your use of this site, along with any retelling, illustration or printed collection ordered or commissioned through it. Browsing these pages means you accept them.
You're welcome to read, save and print these stories for your own enjoyment or research. Please don't copy our retellings or artwork for resale, or present the work gathered here as your own.
A message sent through the site is an enquiry, not a finished agreement. A commission becomes a confirmed order once we've agreed in writing on the legend to be told, the price, and the timing.
We take on only a few commissions each season, researching every legend with care. If we can't do a story justice, or can't finish it in time, we'll say so rather than take the work.
Prices are agreed before any writing or artwork begins, and a deposit is usually required at the start. The remaining balance is due before the finished piece is sent.
Every retelling is researched and written on its own, so wording, pacing and detail vary a little from legend to legend, the way old stories always have. Those differences are part of the storytelling, not a flaw.
We pack each book, print or scroll ourselves and send it once it's properly finished. If something arrives damaged, tell us within a few days and we'll repair or replace it.
A retelling or illustration made to your own specification can't be returned unless something is actually wrong with it, since it was written or drawn for you alone.
All the essays, artwork and retellings on this site are the original work of our editors and illustrators. If you would like to reuse a passage or an image for your own project, just ask — we are usually glad to say yes, with credit given to the tradition it came from.
We do our best to honor the spirit of every legend we retell, tracing each one back to its oldest recorded version. Still, folklore shifts with every teller, and we cannot vouch for every variant passed down through oral tradition or lost along the way.
If anything here changes we will update this page and note the new date at the top, so you know which version of the story you're reading.
Anything you are unsure about can go through the contact page, and we will answer plainly, the same way we try to tell every tale.
